Mahâris 2021

Mahâris, born in 2005 and named after the watch towers that the Arabs used to patrol the sea coast, is the wine that symbolizes the meeting of different styles and cultures. The excellent pedoclimatic conditions, found in Sicily, have allowed a perfect adaptation of Syrah so much so that it is now considered a native. Here in fact the Mediterranean heat of the island and the alberello cultivation, allow it to reach perfect ripeness and at the same time the limestone and chalky soils give it elegance, finesse and a distinct minerality. For this reason from the 2012 vintage, it was decided to vinify it in purity. This recalls the legend according to which it was the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius who imported local vines from Egypt that were planted near the city of Syracuse, from which the name syrah would derive.
Vintage Notes

The winter was mild and rainier than usual, replenishing the underground water reserves so precious during the summer. After pruning, the vines wept profusely, manifesting the exuberance of the season within days. The saplings of Feudo Maccari sprout, first the Grillo then the Nero d’Avola, and in no time they reach the height of the stake that supports them. Spring is very fast and June already has summer temperatures. Summer is the season that most symbolizes these territories; the wind cools the microclimate of the clusters in the sapling. Healthy grapes predict in an excellent result that comes with the September harvest. Ripenesses are excellent and clear, phenolic ripening homogeneous, certainly a vintage of balance and elegance that exalts native varieties such as Nero d’Avola and Grillo.
